African market of the Week – The Fig Tree Market – Ngara

The Fig Tree Market at Ngara is an urban fresh produce market whose main clientele are the residents of Parklands Estate. Since majority of the target market  are from the Indian community (known for their rich culture) , a very wide variety of vegetables you would rarely find in other markets in Nairobi are stocked. I for instance came across so many veggies I had never led eyes on and the whole trip turned into an culinary educational tour.   The bad thing though was the fact that most of the vendors didn’t  know the English names of some of the veggeis hence the confusion still reigns

You will find literally everything in the Fruit and Veggie Kingdom at the Fig Tree Market. From the kawaida  veggies like onions and tomatoes, bananas and oranges to sour gourd ,coconuts,  bitter melon, mint, parsley , dill, sweet corn , curry leaves to baby potatoes, aubergines and what have you. If you are ever in the mood for a therapeutic grocery shopping experience, be sure to visit this place. The colours, sights and sounds are something you will definitely fall in love with.  Prices are also very fair so you don’t have to stress about your pocket getting heavily dented.

Unlike most fresh produce markets with revolting stenches, this place is so clean you won’t even realize you’re in a market
